Haudenosaunee Lodge  & Wakpominee Chapter History

A Long History of Tradition & Service
The Haudenosaunee Lodge #19 was founded on January 1, 1999, with the merger of Wakpominee Lodge #48 and Ganienkeh Lodge #19.  Haudenosaunee Lodge # 19 is a member of Northeast Region, Section NE-3B.    Haudenosaunee Lodge #19

Wakpominee Lodge 48 was originally founded on July 19, 1930, as the successor to an earlier honor society called "The Tribe of Wakpominee".  Sisilijia Lodge of Schenectady provided the Ceremonial Team to induct the original six members.  Eight honorary members were also inducted that year.  The lodge immediately started their involvement in the National Lodge, which at that time operated separately from the Boy Scouts of America, with their attendance at a Regional meeting to help at Camp Ranachqua.

The Lodge was small but active through the 1930's and 40's.  When the National Lodge held a meeting at Camp Rotary on Pilot Knob in September 1931, Wakpominee Lodge was in attendance.  During those years, the Lodge also sponsored a number of trips to various parts of our country, including our Capital, Washington, D.C. , as well as providing service to Camp Wakpominee and our surrounding communities.  The Lodge began holding annual banquet meetings at Trout Lake at the end of the 1930's.  That tradition that is still carried out, with meetings now held at the American Legion Hall in Glens Falls, NY.

In the late 1940's, after the Order of the Arrow (OA) had become an integrated part of the Boy Scouts of America, a new regional structure was implemented.  Wakpominee Lodge was an active participant in OA meetings within this structure, and in 1951, was one of the lodges to form Area 2-D in upstate New York.  The Areas held annual training and fellowship weekends, rotating them through several different camps. Wakpominee Lodge hosted meetings in 1957, 1964, 1974, 1980, 1986, 1990, 1995 and most recently, in 1998.

Camp Service
Throughout it's history, Lodge and Chapter members have devoted thousands of hours of service to Camp Wakpominee in Fort Ann, NY.  The list of service projects we have conducted at Camp includes projects to enhance both Residence Camp and Day Camp facilities, construction of resident housing, program area structures, improvements to the kitchen and Council Ring, assistance with clearing and creating new campsites, cleanup and other related projects.  In 2000, we completed construction of an new pavilion in Scout Crafts donated by Haudenosaunee Lodge 19, Troop 33, and Troop 156.  In 2001, we built another pavilion for the Pioneer Program, near the Dining Hall.

In addition to service projects, each year, the Lodge hosts two major work weekends for all Scouts and Scouters.  We have also held two additional work weekends each year solely for Arrow members since 1988; with over 100 people per weekend attending, totaling well over 1,600 hours per year.

Take a look at our Service Projects  page for more details about these projects and work weekends!

National and Regional Involvement
Since 1958, a Lodge delegation has participated in every National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC).  Two Lodge brothers have been recognized with the Order's highest award, the Distinguished Service Award - Jim Clough at the 1981 conference in Austin, TX and Grant Howe at the 1992 conference in Knoxville, TN.  Grant also served as the only youth to serve in a nationally elected office, that of the Northeast Region Chief.  Lodge members have participated in National Leadership Seminars since the program commenced in the late 1970's, as well as attending three Philmont trips sponsored by the Order of the Arrow and several of the National Indian Seminars.  In 1996, the Lodge Ceremonies Team was awarded the highest possible ranking for the pre-ordeal ceremony at NOAC.  The Lodge will be sending a delegation to the 2002 NOAC.

Future Plans
Each year the Lodge continues to grow and prosper under its excellent youth leadership.  We are looking forward to what we can do in the future, including several planned service projects at Camp and in our local communities!
