"It is not the destination, but the journey that is important"

High adventure treks are nothing new at Camp Wakpominee. For many years Wakpominee has provided a trained guide and the logistical support necessary to ensure Scouts could have a safe memorable experience travelling the lakes, rivers and trails of the Adirondacks. For 2003 we have planned our treks to address the interest and needs of youth and their leaders. The program is designed to strike a balance of canoeing-backpacking, from entry level to the experienced wilderness traveler and difficulty levels from typical to very strenuous. In addition to the preplanned Treks, the staff is ready to work with you to put together a custom trip to meet your needs. No matter which trek an individual or group chooses. It will truly be “the experience of their lives”.

Upon your arrival at Camp Wakpominee your “Voyaguer” will greet you. He or she is an individual chosen by Camp Wakpominee for proven ability to work with youth and adult leaders, knowledge of Scouting skills and the outdoors, and certification as a lifeguard and first-aider. In addition, Voyaguers have completed a rigorous training program and are certified by the Northeast Region, BSA. He or she will facilitate the completion of the various check-in procedures, provide orientation regarding your trek, and do a recheck of each participant’s personal gear. Your Voyageur’s first concern is the safety and welfare of each trek participant. The Voyageur’s second concern is that the members of the Trek crew have an enjoyable and memorable experience to cherish the rest of their lives.

Camp Wakpominee provides the very best canoes, tents, and other crew gear it possibly can. We use select, fresh food whenever we can, particularly at the beginning of treks. A real effort is made to provide meals that are as good as home-cooked and avoid “dehydrated paste in plastic bags”. We believe enjoyable meals make a major contribution to the fond memories we hope to build.

Upon making your reservations, you will be sent a recommended equipment list. The list is born out of experience and has been found to work both in the Adirondacks and in Canada.  All crew members should use it as the basis of what will go in their packs.  Additions or deletions should be made only after long and careful consideration.

Wakpominee Treks are open to registered Scouts who have reached the age of 13 by January 1st. Co-ed treks and treks for handicapped Scouts can be arranged given sufficient time to make the necessary special arrangements.   Additional information can be obtained by contacting Chris Johnson in Crown Point,N Y, at (518) 597-3884 or e-mail at: ADKchris@bluemoo.net

Treks offer the chance for opportunities to work on advancement and earn awards.  Participants will receive the Camp Wakpominee summer camp patch & Loon Trek Patch. Also depending on trek the HistoricTrail Award, Fifty-miler, and over a half a dozen MBs. (You must make arrangements ahead of time to work on merit badges) Merit Badges may require completion of some requirements with home troop or at camp.
